Various images of Ter-Mite use in concrete demolition and rock excavation

Example of Ter-Mite use: boulder removal

In this example, I drilled six holes of 40mm x 850mm into about 1.7m3 of rock.

Four holes would have done the job but I wanted to end up with smaller pieces.

I also could have left two holes unfilled but decided to use all the Ter-Mite I had mixed.

Any drill-size of 38-52mm would have been okay for this kind of work.

The rock was very hard and I drilled using about 20-30cm drill hole spacing.

I used 10 kg of Ter-Mite, which filled all holes all the way to the top and I still had some left. Usually I only fill about 85% of the holes.

When we started, the temperature was +5°C. During the day it dropped to 0°C, and during the night it went below freezing. Without winter additive I expected the process to halt until the temperature rose again. However, after 24 hours, hairline cracks appeared, and after 48 hours the rock was broken. No tools were used after initial drilling.

Average temperature during this process was about 0°C (32°F). The expansive demolition process is faster when the temperature is higher and slower when it’s near to or below freezing.

Another success with Ter-Mite!
